And if you're like most of us, you’ve probably obsessed over:

  • The perfect timeline
  • The exact dollar amount
  • The ideal job title

But what if the secret to achieving your goals has nothing to do with logistics?
What if it's all about how you want to FEEL?

Yes, feelings first. Because behind every dream is an emotional state you crave.

Why Feelings Give You Insight into Your Goals

You want to make more money?
You may be looking for a sense of safety.

Want to start a business?
You may be looking for more freedom.

Thinking of moving cities?
You may be looking for belonging.

Your goals aren’t random.
They’re pointing to a feeling you want more of.

That feeling?
It tells you why the goal matters.

And when you understand that…
You stop chasing things that don’t actually fulfill you.

You start choosing what really fits.

How Identity Shapes Follow-Through

Lasting change comes from how you see yourself.

Instead of saying: "I'm trying to eat healthier."
Say: "I'm someone who makes nourishing choices every day."

Instead of: "I'm trying to work out more."
Say: "I'm a person who moves their body daily."

Notice how you describe yourself day to day. That identity quietly shapes your decisions.

Micro Habits That Lead to Consistency

You don’t need a complete overhaul to change your life.

Try:

  • “Before dinner, I think of something I’m grateful for.”
  • “After brushing my teeth, I stretch for 2 minutes.”
  • After my coffee, I write 3 sentences in my journal.”

These actions are simple enough to repeat. And repetition builds trust with yourself.

How to Align Your Goals With Who You Want to Be

Your goals become more doable when you connect them to who you believe you are.

Instead of saying:
“I’m too scared to take risks.”
“I never finish what I start.”

Try this:

“I’m the type of person who follows through.”
“I’m still figuring it out, but I WILL get there.”

Your words shape your identity, and your identity shapes your actions.

Ask yourself:

“Who am I without fear?”
“What traits do I want to master this year?”

The clearer your identity of who you are when you’re proud of yourself, the funner and easier it is to stick with your goals.

Why Stacking Small Habits Builds Big Momentum

Want to build momentum? As James Clear from Atomic Habits explains, habit stacking helps you stay consistent.

Attach a small action to something you already do.

Examples:

  • “Before my shower, I’ll do 10 pushups.”
  • “Before dinner, I’ll name one thing I’m grateful for.”

These may seem small, but small wins build big self-trust.

The Power of Clear, Measurable Targets

Make your goals more satisfying by giving them structure.

Try goals like:

  • “I will exercise for 30 minutes.”
  • “I will make 10 sales calls today.”
  • “I will write 500 words for my book today.”

Then layer on your mindset work:

  • This is easy for me.
  • I love trying new things.
  • I feel proud of myself when I learn new things.

When your actions and aspirations align, you become unstoppable.

A Hairdresser's Story of Abundance & Identity

Back in my salon days, business always dipped during tax season, and the end of August.

Everyone panicked.
Me? I decided the Universe thought I needed a break:

  • “Slow seasons are my sacred pauses.”
  • “I trust in the rhythm of abundance.”
  • “Rest is part of my success.”

And guess what? That perspective brought me peace and prosperity.

I used to believe just “having enough” was the goal.
Now? I know I'm allowed to want MORE, and feel the joy of abundance today.

How to Find the Emotions Beneath Your Goals

Ask yourself:

  • “If I finish this book/business, how will I feel?”
  • “If I buy this car, will I feel proud? Safe? Important?”
  • “What’s the emotional payoff I’m chasing?”

These questions uncover the truth behind your goals.
And they help you stay aligned even if plans change.

Here’s a personal one…

When I got my MFT license, it felt anticlimactic.

My father had already passed away, and I realized, deep down, I was hoping he’d wave a magical wand and say, “You have value.”

I didn’t know, until that moment, that I was chasing his approval. I wanted to feel worthy. That's the thing about learning to feel the goal before you reach it. You stop outsourcing your worth to other people's reactions or external proof.

Why Prestige Pulls You Away From What Matters (Jan’s Story)

Jan was a wedding planner for celebrity clients. A title that often got praise from others. In her words, “I’m tired of working with entitled and disrespectful people.”

On paper, it looked successful.

But the work didn’t feel meaningful to her.

What she actually cared about was creating personal, heartfelt ceremonies. So she trained to be a wedding officiant

When she shifted her focus back to designing personalized rituals,  her work felt more aligned, and touched her and her clients deeply.

And her business improved as a result.

True success isn’t external validation. It’s fulfillment.

Key Reminders:

  • Build goals around the person you want to become
  • Focus on small, repeatable actions
  • Be patient with the process
  • Set clear, realistic targets
  • Check in with what actually feels meaningful
